THE NEED
Refugee children are one of the most vulnerable groups in the world. Their basic needs for safety, stability, and care are disrupted. According to UNHCR’s 2023 Education Report, over half of all refugee children (7 million) are out of school. Many have been separated from their parents or orphaned. And the global economic downturn is only contributing to higher rates of child labor, exploitation, and trafficking.
Children account for only 31% of the world’s population, but they make up 40% of the refugee population and 50% of the refugees served by RefugePoint. With the scale of forced displacement, there is a growing need for NGO staff trained in refugee child protection. As a result, many unaccompanied refugee children are missing out on the opportunity to be reunited with their families and instead face immense challenges surviving in their country of asylum.
THE GOAL
Focusing Philanthropy and RefugePoint have partnered to raise $1,600,000 to help 2,856 refugees – half of whom are children – reach safe new homes where they can build a brighter future for themselves and their families. Our 2024 campaign will expand access to resettlement and other pathways to safety (family reunification, labor migration, education visas) for refugees who either cannot return home or safely remain in the country to which they have fled.
Since 2005, RefugePoint has helped more than 140,000 refugees across 52 countries relocate to safety. A commitment to training and employing Child Protection Experts across all its programs has resulted in RefugePoint’s reputation as a leader in child protection casework and related training for UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) and NGO partner staff.
Child Protection Experts take on the complex due diligence required for unaccompanied refugee children to be considered for resettlement or other durable solutions. This includes intensive interviews with the child and any caretakers or adults with knowledge of the child’s situation, as well as family tracing to find missing parents or other living relatives. With dedicated caseworkers, refugee children have the possibility to reunite with loved ones and/or resettle in countries with the appropriate care system in place.
THE GIVING MATCH
From February 15 to November 30, 2024, Focusing Philanthropy will add $1 for every $1 raised by RefugePoint donors until the 2024 campaign goal of $1,600,000 is reached.
