THE NEED

More than half the world’s population lacks access to essential health services, with communities receiving care too late or not at all. The country of Côte d’Ivoire is home to one of West Africa’s fastest-growing economies. As of 2019, growth rates in the country had surpassed 7% for seven consecutive years.

However, key health indicators in Côte d’Ivoire have not improved in step with its financial position, and are amongst the worst in the world. Maternal mortality remains a key challenge, with 645 women dying of childbirth or pregnancy-related causes per 100,000 live births. Children face a one in 12 chance of dying before their fifth birthday. Gaps in services persist between health care coverage in urban and rural areas, with 80% of the nation’s economic activity taking place in Abidjan in the south.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Muso believes that the majority of deaths in low-resource contexts are preventable, and that this is an injustice driven by delay. For over 15 years, Muso has built a Proactive Care model to reach patients with speed in Mali. Communities that co-designed the framework have seen health coverage increase tenfold and have achieved and sustained a child mortality rate lower than that of any country in sub-Saharan Africa for seven years running–ultimately reaching 7/1000, on par with that of the United States.

Now, it is time to make the access to care and maternal-child health outcomes observed in Malian communities real around the world. After years of preparation, Muso has a long-term partnership in place to expand beyond Mali’s borders.

THE APPROACH

Focusing Philanthropy has partnered with Muso on a three-year journey to bring community-led care to Côte d’Ivoire, reaching 250,000 patients directly through 50 health centers and informing national policy and practice change for 26 million people.

Muso partners with governments to design, test, and scale strategies for rapid, universal health care. In contrast to traditional delivery models, where patients bear the costs of reaching the healthcare system, Muso’s Proactive Care model employs trusted members of the community to deliver care directly to patients’ doorsteps. These Community Health Workers (CHWs) treat many illnesses in the home and evacuate the sickest patients to redesigned clinics, where patients receive care with no out-of-pocket fees.

Our 2022-2024 campaign funds training and salaries for CHWs and CHW supervisors in addition to government health center staff training and operational support, referral and evacuation costs, and the medical treatment supplies and pharmaceuticals necessary to provide patients with the care they need when they need it.

THE GOAL

“Bringing Community-Led Care to Côte d’Ivoire” aims to raise $6,000,000 by December 31, 2023 to roll out the expansion in three phases:

  • Phase 1 (COMPLETE): a pilot site in Diapé, Adzopé reaching 7,000 patients and supporting 1 health center
  • Phase 2 (COMPLETE): the entire northern district of Mandinani, reaching 92,000 patients and supporting 24 health centers
  • Phase 3: the full southern district of Adzopé, reaching 150,000 patients and supporting 25 health centers

Focusing Philanthropy will add $1 for every $2 contributed by Muso until the campaign goal is reached. Donations must be a minimum of $1,000 and directed to Focusing Philanthropy, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and free resource to donors. Donations are fully tax deductible and 100% of funds contributed will go to the 2022-2024 Côte d’Ivoire campaign. All Focusing Philanthropy costs are covered by its founders.
