Help 950 of the world’s most vulnerable refugees achieve a better quality of life where they are, with RefugePoint and Focusing Philanthropy

As always, Focusing Philanthropy covers all overhead costs. 100% of every donation will go to the Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative.

THE NEED

Each year, there are over four million refugees created worldwide but the collective capacity to resettle fewer than 100,000 (just 2.5%). More than half live in urban areas to avoid the desperate conditions of refugee camps. The vast majority are denied key rights in their host country and cannot work, move freely, own property, or access public services. Unable to provide for themselves or their family, many attempt dangerous onward journeys to western countries and fall victim to slavery, starvation, and shipwreck.

THE GOAL

Focusing Philanthropy and RefugePoint are partnering to raise $500,000 to help refugees stabilize, earn income, and reside safely in the countries to which they have fled.

RefugePoint has developed a holistic approach in humanitarian response by which nearly 2,000 refugees have successfully “graduated” from dependence on aid. Through its Urban Refugee Protection Program (URPP) in Nairobi, Kenya, refugees at greatest risk receive life-changing interventions—food, housing, healthcare, counseling, education, livelihoods coaching, small business grants—necessary for rebuilding their lives and achieving self-reliance in their host country.

Our 2019 campaign will leverage RefugePoint’s credibility and experience as they work with an international network to deliver paths to self-reliance at scale:

  1. Model Program – Support and expand RefugePoint’s URPP, including training and initial capital for 190 refugees to launch small businesses (directly benefitting ~760 of their family members)
  2. Codified Approach – Develop, promote, and distribute a set of self-reliance program tools that package RefugePoint’s URPP model and learnings
  3. Community of Practice – Convene leading humanitarian agencies and provide technical assistance in establishing and strengthening self-reliance programs around the world

THE GIVING MATCH

Focusing Philanthropy will add $1 for every $1 raised by RefugePoint donors, for up to $250,000 in matching support toward the overall campaign goal of $500,000.

To qualify for the match, donations must be a minimum of $1,000 and directed to Focusing Philanthropy, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Donations are fully tax deductible and 100% of funds contributed will go to the Self-Reliance Initiative. All Focusing Philanthropy costs are covered by its founders.
