The Need

Globally, 26% of the world’s population lack access to clean water, 46% lack access to proper sanitation, and an estimated 1.4 million deaths could be prevented each year if these deficiencies were addressed. Access to safe and reliable water, hygiene, and sanitation (WASH) services is essential to protecting human health. However, 1 in 4 schools and 1 in 5 hospitals and clinics lack the proper systems. This leaves schoolchildren to learn in unsafe environments with no drinking water, toilets, or soap for washing hands. Similarly in clinics, front-line health care workers and their patients are more vulnerable to preventable infectious diseases, creating environments that are unsafe for quality care. In both schools and clinics, women and children are disproportionately affected. Girls’ are often forced to miss classes for several days each month because there are no clean menstrual hygiene spaces, or they drop out of school entirely. Women face a much higher risk of complications during pregnancy and birth due to unclean conditions in clinics and hospitals.

The Goal

As of 2025, 5.8 million people are benefiting from improved water services across 28 districts in the nine countries where Water For People works – including at 691 clinics and hospitals and 3,709 schools. Its community-centered model combats the gap in water and sanitation services by partnering with local stakeholders and governments to build the water systems needed to reach every household, school, and health clinic. Water For People also provides community training and capacity building for the long-term sustainability of WASH infrastructure, ensuring communities have the tools they need to maintain their systems for generations.

Our 2026 campaign will bring clean water and sanitation services to 106 clinics, schools, and childcare centers across seven countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Investing in these systems will provide lasting benefits to 52,318 people directly—and many more throughout the broader community—while reducing the rate and spread of infectious diseases and promoting healthy, safe communities.
