The Need
Each year, there are over four million refugees created worldwide but the collective capacity to resettle fewer than 100,000 (<3%). More than half live in urban areas to avoid the desperate conditions of refugee camps. The vast majority are trapped in a state of limbo for decades, denied the right to legally work, move freely, own property, or access public services in the country to which they have fled. Unable to provide for themselves or their families, many attempt dangerous onward journeys to western countries and fall victim to slavery, starvation, and shipwreck.
In 2025, refugees will have fewer options than ever before. The U.S. administration has suspended all resettlement to the United States, putting tens of thousands of refugees in jeopardy. Additionally, cuts to U.S.-funded foreign aid are leaving refugees who have relied on such programs for their survival to fend for themselves.
The GOAL
Focusing Philanthropy and RefugePoint are partnering to raise $4,200,000 to empower refugees who are stuck indefinitely in their country of asylum to rebuild their lives where they are.
RefugePoint is a leader in refugee self-reliance on a local and international scale. At the local level, RefugePoint has developed a holistic approach in humanitarian response by which nearly 5,000 refugees have successfully “graduated” from dependence on aid. Through its Urban Refugee Protection Program (URPP) in Nairobi, RefugePoint provides refugees facing extreme vulnerabilities with a package of tailored support services and case management to help them reach stability, build social and economic capital, and engage in dignified livelihoods. At the international level, RefugePoint co-developed the Self-Reliance Index (SRI), the first-ever global tool for measuring the progress of refugee households toward independence from humanitarian assistance. Piloted and iterated through the URPP, the SRI is now used by more than 70 agencies in 34 countries to assess and improve refugee self-reliance programming.
Our 2025-2026 campaign will set 2,322 refugees in Nairobi on a path to self-reliance through RefugePoint’s flagship program. Additionally, funding will support the expansion of the SRI in several countries of asylum through RefugePoint’s global partner network. With this investment, at least 500,000 refugees by year-end 2026 will be part of self-reliance programs that are monitored, evaluated, and designed using the SRI to continuously improve their effectiveness.
The Giving Match
From April 15, 2025 to December 15, 2026, Focusing Philanthropy will add $1 for every $1 raised by RefugePoint donors, for up to $2,100,000 in matching support toward the overall campaign goal of $4,200,000.
To qualify for the match, donations must be a minimum of $1,000 and directed to Focusing Philanthropy, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Donations are fully tax deductible and 100% of funds contributed will go to the 2025-2026 Refugee Self-Reliance Campaign. All Focusing Philanthropy costs are covered by its founders.
