THE NEED
Each year, there are over four million refugees created worldwide but the collective capacity to resettle fewer than 100,000 (<3%). More than half live in urban areas to avoid the desperate conditions of refugee camps. The vast majority are trapped in a state of limbo for decades, denied the right to legally work, move freely, own property, or access public services in the country to which they have fled. Unable to provide for themselves or their families, many attempt dangerous onward journeys to western countries and fall victim to slavery, starvation, and shipwreck.
In 2025, refugees will have fewer options than ever before. The U.S. administration has suspended all resettlement to the United States, putting tens of thousands of refugees in jeopardy. Additionally, cuts to U.S.-funded foreign aid are leaving refugees who have relied on such programs for their survival to fend for themselves.
THE GOAL
Focusing Philanthropy and RefugePoint are partnering to raise $1,600,000 to empower refugees who are stuck indefinitely in their country of asylum to rebuild their lives where they are.
RefugePoint has developed a holistic approach in humanitarian response by which nearly 5,000 refugees have successfully “graduated” from dependence on aid. Through its Urban Refugee Protection Program (URPP), RefugePoint identifies at-risk refugees who have fled to Nairobi, Kenya from across sub-Saharan Africa, providing a package of tailored support services and case management to help them reach stability, build social and economic capital, and engage in dignified livelihoods.
Our 2025 campaign will set 1,161 refugees facing extreme vulnerabilities on a path to self-reliance via a two-phase approach:
- Stabilization – Refugee clients are assessed to determine the level of support they need and provided with a customized combination of healthcare, housing and food assistance, mental health counseling, and school enrollment for children.
- Empowerment – Once a household’s basic needs are consistently met, clients receive business training and small business grants. Stability services are gradually tapered down as the family becomes more self-reliant. Progress is monitored until clients are able to sustainably support themselves and in turn graduate from the program.
THE GIVING MATCH
Focusing Philanthropy will add $1 for every $1 raised by RefugePoint donors, for up to $800,000 in matching support toward the overall campaign goal of $1,600,000.
To qualify for the match, donations must be a minimum of $1,000 and directed to Focusing Philanthropy, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
