THE NEED

Women and girls are responsible for water collection in 8 out of 10 households with water off premises. Globally, they spend more than 200 million hours each day traveling to and from the nearest source. Considering the average walk for water is 3.7 miles carrying five gallons (40+ pounds) back home to one’s family, this is no easy feat. And the increase of both extreme drought and flooding due to climate change has only made the journey more difficult and dangerous.

Water collection begins as young as four years old and, after that, every aspect of a young girl’s future—education, safety, health, economic opportunity, childbirth—is impacted by her lack of access to clean water and sanitation. Girls attending schools without proper toilets often miss class during their periods, resulting in poor academic achievement and higher dropout rates than boys. They also face a 40% higher risk for sexual assault when they do not have separate facilities, have no choice but to go outside, or have to walk long distances alone to collect water. Additionally, the lack of clean water and improper sanitation in clinics is associated with one million maternal and infant deaths each year.

THE GOAL

Focusing Philanthropy and Water for People (WFP) are partnering to raise $1,500,000 to dramatically improve the daily lives of women and girls in nine developing countries through access to clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene training. Our Clean Water, Her Freedom campaign will provide lasting benefits to 25,000 people via 25 school, clinic, and community systems.

WFP uses a district-centered, “Everyone Forever” model. By partnering with local stakeholders to facilitate the construction and/or rehabilitation of the most contextually appropriate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) systems, WFP ensures that even the hardest-to-reach populations can live healthy and productive lives and that communities have the tools and training they need to maintain access for generations to come. As of 2022, 4.7 million people are benefiting from improved WASH services across the 39 districts in Asia, Africa, and Latin America where WFP works.

Women and girls are carefully considered and play active roles in all of WFP’s solutions. At the school level, WFP provides private girls bathrooms and establishes student-led clubs covering menstrual hygiene. At the community level, WFP promotes female leadership through equal representation on water management committees responsible for tariff collection, maintenance and repair, behavior change, and loan facilitation.
