THE NEED

In recent years, the world has witnessed the highest level of forced displacement on record. At the end of 2020, there were 82.4 million people who were forcibly displaced, which includes an unprecedented 26.4 million refugees languishing worldwide. Among these are hundreds of thousands of children and families who are separated and scattered across different continents, longing to reunite.

With the Biden Administration’s commitment to continue to restore the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program and increase the quota to 125,000 per year in FY22, there is a significant opportunity for targeted identification of the most at-risk refugees in Africa and Asia and implementation of the casework needed to process eligible refugees for resettlement.

Moreover, supporting refugees’ quality of life in their countries of asylum has become a principal goal shared by the humanitarian community, donor governments, and governments of refugee-hosting countries, as the average time of refugee displacement has increased to 20+ years.

THE GOAL

Focusing Philanthropy and RefugePoint have partnered to raise $1,500,000 to expand pathways to safety and self-reliance for nearly 2,900 refugees in 2022.

Since 2005, RefugePoint has helped more than 100,000 refugees across 52 countries access resettlements and complementary pathways, in addition to providing lifesaving interventions—such as shelter, health care, and business training—to 10,000 urban refugees in Nairobi, Kenya annually.

The Refugee Resettlements and Livelihoods campaign will support:

  • 2,313 refugees with access to resettlement or other complementary pathways (family reunification, labor migration, education visas) to relocate to safety
  • 580 of the most vulnerable refugees in Nairobi to progress on a path toward self-reliance so they are able to meet their own basic needs and those of their families, and live in dignity

Our 2022 campaign will also fund critical public health outreach for 1,440 refugees in Nairobi as well as training for 216 UN Refugee Agency and partner NGO staff members on resettlement, family reunification and/or child protection, supporting the expansion of these solutions to all refugees.

THE GIVING MATCH

Focusing Philanthropy will add $1 for every $1 raised by RefugePoint donors, for up to $750,000 in matching support toward the overall 2022 campaign goal of $1,500,000.

To qualify for the match, donations must be directed to Focusing Philanthropy and a minimum of $1,000. Donations are fully tax deductible and 100% of funds contributed will go to the Refugee Resettlements and Livelihoods campaign.
