THE NEED

Over a lifetime, high school graduates who do not attend college will earn $900,000 less than their peers who receive a bachelor’s degree. Yet only 22% of students from low-income communities earn a postsecondary degree, compared to 67% of their peers from high-income areas.

This so-called “degree divide” has remained largely unchanged in the past several decades at exactly the time when postsecondary credentials have become more essential for accessing economic opportunity and social mobility. As a result, hundreds of thousands of young people transition to adulthood every year without the requisite skills, experience, and credentials needed to fairly compete in our society.

THE GOAL

Focusing Philanthropy and OneGoal are launching a campaign to raise $750,000 to provide more young people with equitable opportunities to enroll and persist through college.

OneGoal’s three-year model, delivered from 11th grade through the first year of a postsecondary program, helps students from low-income backgrounds identify paths to success, navigate the system, and enroll in their choice of postsecondary institution. The program leverages existing high school teachers equipped with a robust curriculum, training, and technology to deliver OneGoal as a daily, credit-bearing class. Since its inception in 2007, OneGoal has grown from a small after school program serving 32 students in Chicago to a nationwide initiative that will serve over 13,500 students in seven geographies (Houston, Illinois, Louisiana, New York, Massachusetts, Metro Atlanta, and the Bay Area) in the 2021-22 school year.

Our campaign will support 500 students for a full year of the OneGoal program. To date, 84% of OneGoal high school graduates enroll in a postsecondary institution and 75% of those persist one year after high school graduation.

THE GIVING MATCH

From February 1 to December 31, 2022, every $2 raised by OneGoal will be matched with $1 raised by Focusing Philanthropy, until the campaign goal of $750,000 is reached.

To qualify for the match, donations must be directed to Focusing Philanthropy and a minimum of $1,000. Donations are fully tax deductible and 100% of funds contributed will go to the 2022 Dream It, Achieve It Campaign. All Focusing Philanthropy costs are covered by its founders.
