THE NEED
Routine childhood vaccinations save millions of lives each year and are highly cost-effective. Yet each year, millions of children go under- or un-vaccinated. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a backslide in childhood vaccinations; a July 2022 report from WHO and UNICEF revealed 25 million children missed routine vaccinations because of COVID. UNICEF calls this the “largest sustained drop in childhood immunization in a generation.”
In Mozambique, children in rural pockets and among the urban poor are under-immunized or not immunized at all. While Mozambique’s National Directorate of Public Health prioritizes mobile brigades to vaccinate hard-to-reach children, they typically only vaccinate 10-12% of those in need. Country-wide implementation of immunization outreach strategies have been impeded by insufficient funding, inaccurate data on unvaccinated children, lack of planning, stockouts at mobile brigades, and lack of community coordination.
THE APPROACH
VillageReach and Focusing Philanthropy are partnering to raise $2,000,000 to address immunization barriers and vaccinate 210,000 children in Mozambique, improving their long-term health and establishing systems to increase immunization coverage in the future. The multi-factored approach–which includes community-coordinated mobile brigades, immunization education, and the scaling of an Electronic Immunization Registry (EIR) to identify zero-dose and under-immunized children–will improve overall immunization coverage at 150 health facilities in 13 districts in Napula, Zambezia, and Maputo Provinces.
VillageReach increases access to quality health care for 58 million people throughout sub-Saharan Africa each year. Our campaign will leverage VillageReach’s 20 years of experience in Mozambique, learnings from community-based research, successful implementation of digital health solutions to address challenges at the last mile, and successful medical product delivery strategies for reducing barriers to vaccines.
THE GOAL
From August 15 to December 31, 2023, Focusing Philanthropy will add $1 for every dollar contributed by VillageReach until the overall campaign goal of $2,000,000 is reached.
Donations must be a minimum of $1,000 and directed to Focusing Philanthropy, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and free resource to donors. Donations are fully tax deductible and 100% of funds contributed will go to the Vaccine Equity initiative.
All Focusing Philanthropy costs are covered by its founders.
